Sewing Machines

Sewing Machines can be bought with many different features and come in many different price ranges. Choosing one can be a difficult process if you do not know what to look for.

You should first consider your budget. There are quite a few very good, basic Sewing Machines out there at reasonable prices. If you are only going to do basic, everyday sewing one of these will work fine. Even the basic Sewing Machines usually come with a variety of stitches, such as zig-zag, straight, and buttonhole, and most come with zipper ability.

The next thing you should consider is how you will be using your Sewing Machine. Will you use it to sew clothes, for Quilting, or Embroidery? Will you be doing heavy work such as sewing leather? Would you like for your machine to make special edges such as rolled hems? One machine will not do all things. You should choose a Sewing Machine that will do most of the type of sewing you are interested in. You may have to give up Embroidery for better quilting functions, or vice versa.

If you are just learning to use a Sewing Machine, I recommend that you choose a basic machine. Sewing is fun, but if your first machine is complicated to use you may become overwhelmed. As you gain more experience you can always buy a new Sewing Machine that has more capabilities. This will add more possibilities while keeping your sewing challenging and fun.

You will also want to stick with a basic machine if you do not like things to be technical. There is less to learn with a basic Sewing Machine. However, if you are seeking more of a challenge, the new computerized machines have help screens as well as instructional books. Most Sewing Machine dealers also offer classes to help you become more familiar with your machine. It is important to remember that a fancy machine will make sewing easier once you learn how to use it, but if you are not comfortable using your Sewing Machine you will probably not use it.

I highly recommend buying a Sewing Machine that has the ability of a Free Arm to allow you to sew around an object, such as the hem of a sleeve or other circular item, and one that has an automated buttonhole function.

If you are going to be quilting on your Sewing Machine, you may want to buy a machine that has a large workspace to accomodate a large quilt. You may also be interested in a long arm quilting machine with a frame.

Other things to consider when searching for a new Sewing Machine are how easy it is to wind the bobbin, if the machine can handle twin needles and how many spools of thread will it accomodate. Since the fabric feeds from the bottom it can cause uneven feeding of layers. Does the machine use a dual feed system or a walking foot to feed the top and bottom layers together to prevent bunching or uneven seams?

Once you have decided on the functions and stitches that are important to you, make sure the Sewing Machine will accomodate the presser feet you will need.   If it does not come with an applique foot, a 1/4" quilt foot or a free motion foot and you want to quilt, make sure you can purchase them separately.

Taking the extra time to research what will be the best Sewing Machine for you will ensure you have a lot of fun using it.
