Bolt of Fabric

A Bolt of Fabric is a complete roll of fabric on a cardboard core.  The amount of fabric on a bolt varies.

When the Bolt comes from the manufacturer, it usually contains fifty to a hundred yards of fabric.  Many times the distributor will cut up the fabric, re-roll it and sell it to the retailer with only fifteen to twenty yards of fabric on the Bolt.

The amount the retailer receives on the Bolt is many times less than the amount of fabric that was ordered. The exact amount of fabric that is on a new Bolt is listed on the end of the cardboard core.

When you shop at a fabric store or quilting shop, the amount of fabric that you want to buy is cut from the bolt of the fabric that you have chosen. You can usually find a great discount prices on the last amount of fabric that is left on a Bolt.
