Cotton Fabrics

Although scientist have found pieces of cotton fabric in Mexican caves at least 7,000 years old, it's exact age is unknown.

Known all over the world by the 1500s, cotton was first spun by machinery in England in 1730. The Cotton Gin was patented by Eli Whitney in 1793 and was a vital factor in Cotton's popularity and use today. The Gin seperates the fibers from the seed faster than by hand. It allowed the textile industry to be supplied with larger quantities of Cotton fiber.

Every part of the Cotton plant is useful. The fiber is used to make Cotton Cloth. Cotton is the number one fiber used to make clothing in the United States.

The short fuzz on the Cotton Seed called linters is used in the making of plastics, explosives, high quality paper products, and automobile cushions.

The Cotton Seed is crushed and seperated into the oil, meal and the hulls. The Cotton Seed oil is used in food products such as salad dressing and cooking oil. The Cotton Meal and Hull are used in fertilizer and feed for fish, poultry and livestock.

The leaves and stalks of the Cotton are plowed into the ground to enrich the soil for the next crop.

There are different types of Cotton. The low and medium grades are found in mass produced and cotton blend goods. The higher quality cottons are used in bedding and fine shirtings. Egyptian Cotton is known for its soft luxurious feel and luster.

Organic Cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and fertilizers.

Most Cotton products can be washed and dried, but you should always be sure to read the care label. Cotton fabrics will keep their color longer if washed in warm or cool water. Too much bleach will weaken the fibers of the Cotton, so be careful not to use too much.

100% Cotton Fabrics will shrink if they have not been treated with a durable press or shrinkage resistant finish.

Cotton clothing absorbs perspiration and is more comfortable to wear due to it's soft nature.
