Felt Fabric

Felt is a non-woven fabric.  It is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers.  Some felts are soft while others are tough enough to form construction materials.

Felt is used in the automobile industry, in musical instruments and in children's storytelling through the use of felt boards and puppets.  Felt is also used to cover pool tables.

A popular craft is needle felting.  Special barbed felting needles are used as a sculpting tool.  The barbs catch on the fibers and push them through the layers of wool tangling them together.  This technique can achieve fine details in 3D felted work.
