Sequined Fabrics

Sequined Fabric is beautiful but can be tricky to work with. It comes in many varieties such as all-over-sequins, sequins in rows, and randomly scattered sequins with different fabric backings including wovens.

When working with Sequined Fabric it is best to choose a simple pattern without difficult seams, pleats, gathers or pockets.

Sequined Fabric does have a nap and will stretch more in one direction than another. You will want to keep this in mind when you are laying out your pattern pieces.

To make cutting Sequined Fabric easier, place the fabric between two pieces of tissue paper. You will need to hold the pattern with fabric weights as pins will not work on Sequined Fabric. Do not try to cut through more than one fabric layer at a time as you could snag the fabric and ruin it.

Sequined Fabric will dull and nick your scissors, so you should use an old pair to cut the pattern out with. Since chalk and markers will not show up, you will need to mark it with tailor's tacks or safety pins.

Make sure and handle the Sequined Fabric carefully. To control the loss of sequins, sew a running stitch a 1/4 inch away from the cut edge all around the cut pattern piece and secure it with Fray Check.
