Velvet and Velour Fabrics
Velour is a knitted, plush fabric that is usually made from cotton or synthetic materials such as polyester. It combines the rich feel and look of Velvet with the stretch of knits. It is the thick, soft nap that makes the fabric luxurious to the touch.
Velour is used in dancewear because of the ease of movement in the fabric. It is also used as upholstery fabric in place of Velvet. In the last 10 years, Velour has been used for pillow and mattress covers as well as cloth diapers.

Velour is inexpensive and easy to care for. It should be washed in cold water with like colors. It should be dried flat to avoid damaging the nap. It can also be dry cleaned, however sometimes it can distort the nap of the fabric, which can cause it to look peculiar and to become uncomfortable.
Velvet is a tufted fabric with evenly distributed threads and a short dense pile which gives it a distinct feel. When it was first introduced, Velvet was very expensive. It was considered a luxury fabric the same as silk.
Velvet is made from silk fibers. Cotton can also be used, however this results in a less luxurious fabric. A small amount of lycra, or spandex, is often added to give the Velvet stretch.
Velvet is difficult to clean at home and dry cleaning is the best way to care for it.
